Sustainability at MSI Surfaces

We believe premium surfaces and environmental responsibility are not in conflict. They are inseparable. Here is how we embed sustainability into every product, every partnership, and every delivery.

Four Pillars of Environmental Stewardship

01

Indoor Air Quality

Over 40% of MSI's flooring catalog carries GREENGUARD Gold certification — the most rigorous indoor air quality standard, covering more than 10,000 chemicals and VOCs. This certification is required for LEED v4 IEQ credits in schools, healthcare, and commercial construction. We don't stop at minimum compliance: our Everlife LVP collection achieves GREENGUARD Gold at the manufacturing level, not through post-processing.

02

Responsible Sourcing

MSI audits all primary manufacturing partners across Portugal, Spain, India, Brazil, and Turkey against our Responsible Sourcing Standard — a framework covering: (a) wastewater and quarry runoff management, (b) worker safety conditions and compensation, (c) community impact disclosures, and (d) conflict mineral compliance. Audit findings are reviewed annually with improvement plans tracked over 18-month cycles.

03

Product Transparency

Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are published for key MSI product families including Q Quartz and the Arterra Paver line. EPDs provide third-party verified life cycle assessment data: carbon footprint per square foot, embodied energy, water usage, and end-of-life recyclability. Architects using MSI products in LEED v4 projects can cite EPDs to satisfy MRc2 requirements. Download links are available on individual product specification sheets.

Distribution Efficiency

MSI's 38-center distribution network is designed to minimize last-mile logistics. Consolidating tile, countertop, flooring, and paver orders through a single vendor reduces the number of freight shipments per project — directly lowering transport carbon emissions. Our regional DCs stock a minimum of 80% of our core SKU catalog at all times, reducing emergency re-orders and associated air freight.

Verified by Independent Bodies

Our certifications are not self-declared. Each is maintained through ongoing third-party audit cycles, product retesting, and documented chain of custody from manufacturer to distribution.

GREENGUARD Gold

UL Environment testing covers >10,000 chemicals. Eligible for LEED v4 IEQ credits in schools and healthcare.

FloorScore

SCS-EC10.3 standard for resilient, hard surface, and laminate flooring VOC emission testing. Required for many commercial specs.

NSF/ANSI 51

Food-safe surface certification for quartz countertops in commercial kitchens, cafeterias, and hospitality environments.

ISO 9001:2015

Quality management system encompassing product testing, supplier qualification, fulfillment, and customer issue resolution.

How MSI Products Contribute to LEED Credits

IEQ Credit

Low-Emitting Materials

GREENGUARD Gold certified MSI flooring and adhesive-applied products qualify for LEED v4 BD+C and ID+C Low-Emitting Materials credits. Specify Everlife LVP or MSI porcelain tile to support this credit category with IEQ compliance documentation.

MRc2 Credit

Building Product Disclosure

MSI publishes Environmental Product Declarations for Q Quartz and Arterra Pavers. These EPDs conform to ISO 14044 and PCR standards, satisfying LEED v4 MRc2 Disclosure and Optimization requirements. Contact our spec desk for the latest EPD document package.

MRc3 Credit

Responsible Sourcing

MSI's documented supplier audit program, which covers environmental practices at primary quarries and manufacturing facilities, can be used to support LEED v4 MRc3 Responsible Sourcing of Raw Materials credits when included in the project's materials documentation.

What We Don't Claim — And Why

We believe greenwashing is a disservice to genuine sustainability. Here are the honest limitations of our current environmental program.

No. Approximately 40% of our flooring catalog is GREENGUARD Gold certified. Natural stone products — marble, granite, travertine — are inherently low-emission but are not formally tested under the GREENGUARD program because the certification was designed for manufactured products. We are expanding GG Gold certification to additional product families in our 2025–2026 procurement cycle. Product-level certification status is shown on each specification sheet.

Some. Our Q Quartz line contains post-industrial recycled quartz aggregate as a byproduct of the manufacturing process, though the exact percentage varies by colorway. Natural porcelain tile is clay-based with no synthetic recycled content. We do not currently publish recycled content percentages on all products because the data is not consistently auditable across our full manufacturing partner network. Where verified data exists, it is noted on the EPD.

Not currently. MSI's distribution operations, outbound freight, and the manufacturing of products by our supply chain partners generate significant carbon emissions. We have not made a carbon neutrality claim because we do not yet have the scope 3 emissions data required to support one credibly. We are conducting our first third-party scope 1–3 inventory in 2025 and will publish findings before making any carbon commitments.
