The Three Questions I Ask Before Every Tile Order Now

I've boiled it down to three questions. If a supplier can't answer all of them, no price per square foot is low enough to make up for the risk.

  1. What's the all-in delivered price? Not the per-foot price. Delivered, taxed, including the 10–15% overage I'm going to order for cuts and breakage. That's the number I compare.
  2. Can you confirm lot continuity for the full quantity? If the answer is "we'll see what arrives," I'm not buying tile. I'm buying a gamble.
  3. What if I need 20% more later? If the answer is "we'll backorder from overseas," I'm doubling the order right now. My crew's schedule is worth more than my storage space.

Since 2024, our renovations have been closing on schedule. Finance stopped calling about surprise invoices. My contractor knows I order overage now, and he doesn't pad the estimate to cover my cheapness.

One caveat: this pricing is from our Q4 2023 project and my early 2025 purchasing experience. Tile prices and freight rates move around, so verify current numbers before you budget. The pattern, though, hasn't changed.
