If you’re choosing an MSI countertop for a client or your own kitchen and you want the short version, here it is: decide by location and use before color. For most indoor kitchens, engineered quartz is the most reliable default. For outdoor kitchens, sunrooms, or installations where the client wants one-of-one natural character, granite usually makes more sense. Marble is the one you specify only when the end user understands that acid will etch it (wine, lemon, even some cleaners).
I say that from a particular seat. I’m a quality and brand compliance manager at MSI International Surfaces. Roughly 180 inbound container lots cross my desk every year before they’re released to distribution, and in the past 12 months I’ve rejected or quarantined about 7% of them. Most were not “ugly stone” situations. They were consistency issues: a lot that drifted from its approved sample, or slabs that didn’t work together as a bookmatched set. The countertop you choose is only as good as the physical lot behind it.
Four years of this job have made me a lot less interested in the “quartz vs. granite” argument, because it’s usually the wrong question. Quartz, granite, and marble are not rivals. They are different tools, and each one is wrong in the right context. What actually predicts whether a countertop job goes smoothly is the quality of the specific lot, not the hero shot of the product in a brochure.
Example from our Q1 2024 audit: a 54-slab granite order landed with the first few slabs matching the submitted sample perfectly. Under raking light, half the container showed color-matched resin patches—repairs that disappear in showroom lighting but show up after fabrication. The supplier said it was “well within industry standard.” We rejected the lot. They redid it at their own cost, but the replacement cycle took three weeks—or rather, four once the new shipment was inspected and released.
That expensive lesson changed our purchase order terms. Now every incoming natural-stone order requires disclosure of filled fissures before cutting. It’s the kind of detail that never appears in a marketing comparison chart, but it shows up on the final invoice if you skip it.
If you’re a contractor, a designer, or a homeowner working with a fabricator, these checks are simple enough to copy:
1. Buy by lot, not by color name. A color name such as “Bianco Antico” can cover many blocks and many years of production. Ask for the actual lot number and current photos of the actual slabs. If a vendor can’t produce those, every conversation after that is guesswork.
2. Ask what was filled. Natural stone has fissures; that’s a property of the rock, not automatically a defect. A stable fissure filled with color-matched resin can be perfectly acceptable. A crack running through a slab is a different category. The red flag isn’t that repairs exist. The red flag is that they aren’t documented.
3. Ask for the water absorption report. For natural stone, the commonly cited test is ASTM C97. For kitchen countertops, I prefer to see absorption under 1%, and the better lots usually land well below that. If a supplier can’t share a current lab report, ask why. A name or a pattern won’t tell you this; a lab result will.
4. View the slab in daylight. Warehouse lighting can make a filled or treated slab look uniform. We almost released an order this fall because it matched under LED lighting. In five minutes of daylight, the treatment looked patchy (thankfully we caught it before it shipped). If you can’t see the actual slab, ask for photos taken in natural light.
For most indoor kitchens and bathrooms, engineered quartz is the default I suggest. It doesn’t require sealing, it resists stains well, and color consistency from slab to slab is better than with nearly any natural stone. It’s not “maintenance-free”—no surface is—but the maintenance is simple. And because quartz contains resin, treat hot pans and direct sun with some sense.
Granite and other natural stones make sense when natural character is the whole point, or when the surface will face heat and UV that engineered stone handles less well. Granite does need periodic sealing, and its pattern varies by lot. That variation is not a defect, but it needs to be planned for. Outdoor kitchens and heavily used bar tops often get my granite vote.
Marble is the option I use when the design asks for it and the owner accepts the trade-off. Acid etches marble, full stop. In a bathroom vanity, that’s often acceptable. In a kitchen where somebody makes lemonade every day, less so. If the client wants the marble look without the etching conversation, a marble-look engineered slab is the more honest recommendation.
I can only speak to the material that flows through U.S. distribution and the standard 2cm/3cm fabrication world. If you’re working on an exterior rainscreen, a commercial kitchen with fire and code rules, or a project that involves direct importing from a specific quarry, my checklist is just a starting point. The engineer of record and the fabricator’s specifications should win that argument.
And I’m deliberately not going to tell you the “best” MSI color. Color is the last decision. If you pick the color first and then try to make the material fit the project, you’ve put the riskiest decision at the front of the process. So if someone promises you a completely maintenance-free countertop, that’s not a benefit statement—it’s a warning. Ask for the lot number, see the slab in daylight, and make the material earn the job.
