MSI Quartz vs. MSI Granite: The 2025 Field Comparison for Builders & Designers

My role at MSI International Surfaces is project support. I have spent 11 years helping builders, designers and retail stores get countertop materials onto job sites when the schedule is already tight—which has added up to 200+ rush orders so far. If there is one sentence I hear again and again, it is this: “quartz or granite?”

This article is my real-time answer, with the caveats and limits that a sales sheet never tells you.

The comparison framework I actually use

Strip away the brand names and the material story is straightforward. Granite is natural stone: quarried in blocks, sliced into slabs, and finished. Engineered quartz is a manufactured surface, typically 90% to 93% crushed natural quartz bound with resin and pigments.

That difference in origin drives everything else. It changes how predictable the color is, how fast you can reorder, how the surface tolerates heat and sunlight, and ultimately what the invoice really adds up to. Those are the four dimensions I compare, in that order.

Dimension one: repeatability vs. natural character

From the outside, appearance is an aesthetics conversation. From my seat, it is mostly a supply-chain conversation.

Engineered quartz is designed for repetition. Choose the same color code from the same line, and the slab delivered for the next phase will look like the slab delivered last month. That consistency is why quartz is an easy recommendation for multifamily buildings, hotels, and any project where you need 40 identical kitchens.

Granite works the opposite way. Two slabs with the same commercial color name can differ in movement, veining, and mineral speckle. Matching is done in person at a slab yard, not from a photo. For a one-off, high-end kitchen where the client wants “a piece of nature,” that variation is the point. For a multi-room rollout, variation is what gets you callbacks.

A blunt honesty note: no supplier should promise you a guaranteed match across batches—not for natural stone, and honestly not for every quartz color either. If the material matters, buy a spare slab and store it. That habit has saved more than one project I have worked on.

If your design goal is identical repetition, start with quartz. If the goal is a unique natural focal point, granite is the better answer.

Dimension two: lead times and replacement math

When I’m triaging a rush order, the first question is not “Which is prettier?” It’s “If this slab breaks or arrives wrong, how many days do we lose?”

Stocked quartz colors move quickly out of local warehouses—commonly 3 to 5 business days to a fabricator, assuming the color is actually in the building and not only in the catalog. Reorders are relatively predictable because the production process is controlled.

Granite lives on a different clock. Availability depends on where the quarry is, when the next container arrives, and how much of the same bundle is left. I have seen large slab orders for popular granite colors sit in a queue for weeks because the specific block was already cut and sold.

A real example: in November 2024, a fabricator called on a Thursday afternoon. A granite waterfall slab cracked during handling, and the home closing was nine days away. The original granite was from a bundle that had sold out; a matching reorder was weeks out at best. So we replaced that waterfall panel with a stocked engineered quartz and paid around $600 in expedited freight to get it to the shop in five days. The closing happened on time.

No one at that closing asked whether quartz was “better.” They asked whether the work was done.

If your schedule has no float, the material with a predictable restock path usually wins. That is usually quartz, though not always: if enough matching granite is sitting in the same regional yard, granite can work too.

Dimension three: heat, sunlight and the counterintuitive part

Most buyers expect engineered quartz to be tougher because it’s “natural stone plus engineering.” That assumption gets expensive.

The resin that gives quartz its uniformity also gives it limits. A hot skillet set directly on quartz can soften or mark the resin, often leaving a whitish mark that is difficult to repair. Granite—rock formed under heat and pressure—generally handles a hot pan without drama.

Direct sunlight is similar. Prolonged UV exposure can yellow or fade the resin in many quartz products, so I don’t specify quartz for outdoor kitchen counters unless the manufacturer has a specific UV warranty. Granite does fine outdoors.

Now the flip side. Granite is porous. Unsealed granite absorbs red wine, oil, and even coffee, so it needs a sealant renewed periodically. Quartz is more stain-resistant and needs no sealing. It is also more forgiving when somebody leaves a lemon wedge on the counter overnight.

Neither surface is maintenance-free, and I walk away from any salesperson who says otherwise.

For an outdoor kitchen or a serious cooking kitchen where hot pans are everywhere, granite is the more practical choice. For an everyday family kitchen where spills and low maintenance matter more than heat, quartz usually wins.

Dimension four: real total cost, beyond the first quote

The most frequent question I get is “Which one is cheaper?” I always answer with another question: “Which quote are you comparing?”

A lower slab price can disappear quickly once you add templating, fabrication, seams, edge profile, cutouts for sink and cooktop, delivery, and, for granite, sealing. I have seen “budget” granite end up costing more than a mid-range quartz by the time every line item landed on the invoice.

Ask what’s not included before asking what’s the price. The supplier who lists every fee upfront—even when the total looks higher—usually costs less in the end.

For a rough 2025 benchmark: across US markets, total installed budgets for mid-range granite generally landed between $35 and $85 per square foot, while engineered quartz usually ran from $55 to $125 or more per square foot. These are sanity checks, not official MSI prices. If a quote sits far below the range, the right question is which line items were left out.

The ranges above assume basic rectangular counters and typical seams. Exotic edge profiles, waterfall details, or specialty slabs can break any budget.

  • Specify engineered quartz when you need repeatability across many units, fast restock, easy stain resistance, or a material that keeps its look without sealing.
  • Specify granite when the design calls for a unique natural slab, the counter will face serious heat, or the installation is outdoors.
  • If you are under two weeks from installation, choose whichever material is physically stocked in your local MSI distribution center or showroom. Ask “what do you have in the building today?” rather than “what can you quote me?”

The surface that is “better” does not exist. The surface that fits your use case and your schedule does. Choose by scenario, ask the inventory question, and read the actual quote—the project will take care of the rest.
