MSI Q Quartz vs. Granite: What I Check Before Approving a Countertop

Wrong MSI? If you're looking for MSI motherboards or gaming hardware, this isn't that company. This MSI is MSI International Surfaces, the supplier behind Q Quartz and one of the larger natural stone programs in North America. Easy mix-up, different industry.

I'm a quality manager at a countertop fabrication shop. Every order we produce goes through me before it reaches the customer: slabs compared against the approved sample, edge profiles checked, seams and cutout locations reviewed. We do somewhere around 200 projects a year—maybe 180, maybe 230; I'd need to check the system for an exact count.

When someone asks me whether MSI Q Quartz is better than granite, I don't answer with a brand brochure. I compare the way I have to inspect them. That means consistency, fabrication risk, durability, maintenance, and the checks that keep us from cutting the wrong material.

Consistency: Repeatable Product vs. One-Of-A-Kind Stone

Q Quartz is engineered in a factory, so the background color is controlled and the veining is more repeatable than anything nature produces. That's a real advantage for multifamily projects, retail work, or any job where you need multiple slabs to look like they belong together. But it doesn't mean every slab is identical. Different lot numbers can shift slightly in warmth or tone. That's why I ask for lot numbers before a big quartz order goes to the saw.

Granite is the opposite. Every slab is a one-off. The sample in a showroom is only a hint of what the full slab will look like. It's not a defect when granite arrives with more movement than the small sample suggested—it's the nature of natural stone. To be fair, that unique character is exactly why many designers choose granite in the first place.

Verdict: If consistency across units or phases matters more than unique character, Q Quartz is easier to manage. If the project is built around one distinctive natural slab, granite can win—but only if someone selects the actual slab, not a photo or a sample chip.

Fabrication: Don't Treat Them Like the Same Stone

People assume any stone shop can fabricate both the same way. In practice, they have different personalities at the saw. Q Quartz is dense and abrasive. It needs water-cooled diamond tooling and a fabricator who understands engineered stone. If anyone suggests cutting quartz with a glass cutter or scoring it like a ceramic tile, stop that conversation. It's not glass, and it's not tile.

Granite tends to be more brittle along natural fissures. I've seen a sink cutout go straight through an invisible crack and turn into a callback that should have been caught during slab inspection. We now inspect every granite slab for fissures before we route any opening.

Verdict: Choose a fabricator based on experience with the specific material, not just price per square foot. A good shop asks about edge return, sink type, seam placement, and finish before cutting. If they don't ask questions, they're guessing.

Durability: What I Actually See in Finished Kitchens

From inspections and callbacks over the last several years, Q Quartz handles acids better than most natural stones. Coffee, wine, lemon juice—normal kitchen spills don't etch it. Because it's nonporous, it also gives stains fewer places to hide. The tradeoff is heat. Quartz contains resin, and a hot pan straight off the stove can damage the surface.

Granite handles heat well and is hard enough for everyday kitchen use. Its vulnerability is porosity. Spills can penetrate if the sealer has worn thin, especially in a busy household or a commercial kitchen that doesn't follow a maintenance routine.

One thing I won't say is that Q Quartz is maintenance-free. No stone surface is. Sealer-free, yes. Maintenance-free, no. Grease still collects at seams, and harsh abrasive cleaners can dull the finish.

Verdict: For kitchens with a lot of acidic food prep and wet wiping, quartz is the lower-risk choice. For clients who routinely put hot pans directly on the counter, granite has a real advantage. Neither wins every project.

Maintenance: Who Will Actually Take Care of It?

Q Quartz doesn't require a topical sealer. MSI's care literature for Q Quartz recommends warm water and a mild cleaner for everyday maintenance (Source: MSI Q Quartz care instructions, accessed March 2025). I like that guidance because it doesn't overpromise.

Granite should be sealed periodically. How often depends on the stone, but the water-drop test is a reliable indicator: if water soaks into the surface instead of beading, it's time to reseal. That's not hard, but it requires someone to own it.

This is where rental and commercial projects matter. If the end user is a retail space or rental unit without a maintenance plan, granite can stain in ways that are hard to reverse. Quartz gives the owner fewer things to remember. If the owner enjoys caring for natural stone, granite isn't a burden—it's part of the material's personality.

Verdict: Low-maintenance and predictable? Q Quartz. A natural material that rewards regular care with depth and character? Granite.

The Inspection That Prevents the Rework

My biggest lesson after years of reviewing orders is that failures are rarely about brand. They're about approving the wrong reference point.

Once I approved a granite kitchen countertop from a photograph sent by a stone yard. The photo looked calm and uniform. The delivered slab had far more movement than the photo suggested. The client rejected it, and the redo cost us around $18,000—not just material, but fabrication time, schedule slip, and a damaged relationship. Looking back, the photo wasn't the real problem. My process was. I should have required the client to see the actual slab before fabrication, not just a reference image.

Since then, we use a material approval hold point before any order goes to the saw. Here's what my checklist looks like:

  • Compare every delivered slab against the physical sample under natural daylight, not just warehouse lighting.
  • Record lot numbers for engineered quartz. If lot numbers differ, compare slabs side by side before approving.
  • Inspect full granite slabs for fissures, pits, and surface stains before routing cutouts.
  • Confirm the edge profile on a full fabricated return before running the production batch.
  • Make the designer or contractor sign off on the actual slab. If no one signs, nobody cuts.

Five minutes of verification is cheaper than five days of correction. I say that as someone who learned it the expensive way.

Which Should You Choose?

If you're standardizing countertops across multiple apartments, commercial locations, or phases of a building, MSI Q Quartz is usually the more sensible specification. It gives you repeatable color, no sealer requirement, and less variation between units.

If the project is a unique home or a hospitality space where natural stone is part of the design story, granite is worth specifying. The key is to plan for its variability: choose slabs in person, review them in the client's lighting, and hold enough material for the entire installation before cutting starts.

The answer isn't which material is objectively superior. It's which one you can inspect and approve before the saw starts. That control is what prevents the expensive surprises.
