A countertop budget usually fails before the slab is ordered. That was true in 2023, and it's still true in 2025. I've spent the past six years reviewing finish-material purchases for a mid-sized construction company. We track every invoice, every quote, and every change order in the same cost system. So when I say the problem isn't the material price, I'm not guessing. I'm reading my own project records.
Part of the problem is the name. Type 'MSI' into an online search and you might get a computer hardware company. In the surface industry, MSI is MSI International Surfaces, a supplier of quartz, natural stone, porcelain, tile, and engineered flooring. That distinction matters because brand alone doesn't tell a fabricator what to make.
Here's where the budget pain starts: quotes get compared before they're complete.
Let me use an example from our 2024 records. We wanted an MSI quartz countertop for a multifamily bathroom project. Quote A said, '3cm quartz, installed.' Quote B said, '3cm quartz from a specific MSI collection, standard edge, template visit included, undermount sink cutout included, seams placed per approved drawing.'
Quote A was about $4,300 lower. It looked like a better deal. It wasn't. Quote A was simply less scope. Once the vendor added fabrication, template, cutouts, and seam placement, it wasn't the cheaper option. It was about $6,100 more.
After enough invoices like that, I stopped calling it a vendor problem. I call it a specification problem. A generic product name produces a generic quote. The final invoice is always more specific.
When someone asks for MSI countertops without naming a material category, it's like ordering furniture from a catalog without saying whether they want a sofa or a shelf. The selection process has to go deeper: quartz, natural stone, sintered surface, porcelain slab, or tile. Then you need the finish, thickness, edge profile, seam policy, cutouts, backsplash, delivery, and installation. Each one changes the number on the invoice.
The visible product isn't the full product either. A 2-inch sample can't show the movement of a full slab. Veining, figure, and color depth vary in natural stone, and engineered materials have production tolerances too. That doesn't mean you should avoid those materials. It means you should select from a full slab before fabrication, not from a photo on a phone. When I use MSI on a project, I try to view full slabs or get slab-level photos from the actual lot before the purchase order goes out. That one step prevents more surprises than any pricing spreadsheet I've built.
Let me get specific about where the cost gap hides. Sometimes it's a hidden fee. Just as often, it's a hidden decision that nobody has made yet.
Edge profile is the first example. A simple eased edge costs a fraction of a mitered edge. If the quote doesn't say which edge is included, the estimator and the fabricator can both believe they're talking about the same thing. They aren't.
Seams are the second example. If you leave seam placement open, the fabricator will put the seams where the fabrication is easiest. That isn't malicious, but practicality and visual priorities aren't the same. Last year, I approved an order without a seam-position note because I had worked with the fabricator before and figured they'd handle it. They did. They put a seam directly above the sink faucet, where it caught the light. It was structurally correct and visually wrong. We paid roughly $1,800 to redo the section.
That mistake wasn't a material defect. It happened because the quote didn't say where the seam belonged. Honestly, I still don't understand why seam placement is treated as an afterthought. It causes more rework than almost any slab defect I've seen, maybe because it's easier to blame field conditions than to make a decision on paper.
Batch and inventory are the third example. Natural stone and some engineered products can vary by lot. A quote that promises 'this color' without confirming the lot leaves the door open for surprises. No reasonable supplier should be expected to guarantee an exact match across separated batches. That isn't a flaw in the product. It's a reason to verify inventory before telling a client their pattern is available.
What was best practice in 2020 may not be enough in 2025. The catalog has expanded. Large-format porcelain slabs and improved printing techniques have made once-exotic looks much more accessible. New materials and fabrication methods have changed some details that matter at the job site.
But the fundamentals haven't disappeared: a slab still needs an edge, a seam still needs a location, and a beautiful material can still fail from a weak specification. The execution has transformed. The risk points have not.
I'm not going to argue that you should buy the most expensive option. I'm going to argue that you should stop comparing quotes that don't describe the same deliverable. My fix is simple: a quote must answer five questions before it becomes a purchase order.
This list isn't meant to make procurement complicated. It's meant to make quotes comparable. A number is useful only when it covers the same work as another number. The cheapest quote is often not the cheapest option; it's just the most incomplete one.
My experience is based on roughly 80 multifamily and light-commercial projects over the past six years. If you're working on a one-off custom home, your process might be different. That's fine. The five questions still apply.
The goal isn't to find the lowest number. It's to find the number that tells the truth about the project - and that number is the one I'll sign.
